The Paul E. Johnson Memorial Fund was created for the purpose of beautifying and maintaining green space and public thoroughfares in downtown Portsmouth, Ohio. The fund is used to plant trees, flowers and gardens - and for providing beautiful, colorful planters in various public areas throughout downtown Portsmouth. Main Street Portsmouth, on whose Board of Directors Paul served, manages this fund and is an Accredited National Main Street Community.
The Paul E. Johnson fund has tremendously improved the look and feel of downtown Portsmouth. Areas that were once dull and barren are now overflowing with life and color. The lush gardens and planters instantly enhance each site, making the downtown more inviting. In the spring and summer, it is worth a trip to town just see the flowers in full bloom.
To tourists entering Portsmouth for the first time, these beautification efforts prove that the downtown is cared for and loved. It is so important that those entering Portsmouth understand this, because the downtown is vital to the identity of Scioto County at large. For many, the downtown is their first impression of Scioto County. The beautification projects ensure that the impression is a positive one.
The many compliments we receive are a testament to the importance of continuing these beautification projects. There also many areas that could still need improvement. The need for continued improvement drives the Paul E. Johnson Fund into the future. With the continued support of the community, these projects will enhance our downtown for years to come. ~~ Jennifer Foster, Main Street Portsmouth Executive Director
I humbly thank the many contributors to this fund so very much for their generous contributions to the Main Street Portsmouth Paul E. Johnson Memorial Fund.
I am so pleased that, as Paul’s fund is being utilized for beautifying downtown Portsmouth, people are once again enjoying being in and walking around the area and that those who knew and loved Paul are perhaps smiling and remembering his big, warm heart, gentle soul and love for Portsmouth.
Main Street Portsmouth has wonderfully managed the funds appropriately and beautifully; and I am so humbled that over $22,000 has thus far been donated to Paul’s fund. In fact, having spent some $11,000, a number of projects have been completed; the design and plantings within the three street corners of the Municipal Parking Lot at Chillicothe and Seventh streets as well as numerous large pots (and glorious flowers and plants) at Alexandria Park, City Hall, the Floodwall, Market Street Square and Roger Rogers Esplanade... with much more to come. What a difference it has made to this area. As Hilda Drake of Main Street Portsmouth recently wrote, “this fund is a God-send to the MSP beautification project!”
Warmly,
Kevin W. Johnson
